X-ray and UV observations with XMM-Newton

چکیده
We present an XMM-Newton observation of NGC 7469, including studies of the X-ray and UV variability, 0.2−10 keV spectral continuum, Fe Kα emission line and the first-ever high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the soft X-ray warm absorber. We compare the properties of this X-ray warm absorber with the UV warm absorber as seen in a FUSE observation one year previously. The 0.2−10 keV spectral continuum is best fitted by a power-law plus two blackbody model. An Fe Kα emission line is visible which consists of a single narrow component and is well-modelled by a simple gaussian. Narrow absorption and emission lines in the soft X-ray RGS spectrum demonstrate the existence of a multi-phase warm absorber with a range in log ξ of ∼ 2 to ∼ −2 where ξ is in erg cm s. The warm absorber is blueshifted by several hundred km s. The highest-ionisation phase of the absorber is the best constrained and has an overall equivalent Hydrogen column of order 10 cm; we find that its ionisation parameter is consistent with that of the warm emitter which generates the narrow emission lines. We identify this high ionisation absorber with the low-velocity phase of the UV absorber observed

Multiwavelength Observations of the BL Lacertae Object PKS 2155 – 304 with XMM - Newton
The optical-UV and X-ray instruments on-board XMM-Newton provide an excellent opportunity to perform simultaneous observations of violently variable objects over a broad wavelength range. The UV and X-ray bright BL Lac object PKS 2155–304 has been repeatedly observed with XMM-Newton about twice per year. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of the simultaneous multi-wavelength variabil...
متن کاملUltraviolet and X-ray variability of NGC 4051 over 45 days with XMM–Newton and Swift
We analyse 15 XMM–Newton observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051 obtained over 45 d to determine the ultraviolet (UV) light curve variability characteristics and search for correlated UV/X-ray emission. The UV light curve shows variability on all time-scales, however with lower fractional rms than the 0.2–10 keV X-rays. On days–weeks time-scales the fractional variability of the UV is Fvar ...
متن کاملX-ray emission from the blazar AO 0235+16: the XMM-Newton and Chandra point of view
We analyse five observations of the BL Lac object AO 0235+16 performed with the Chandra and XMM-Newton satellites during the years 2000–2005. In the February 2002 observation the source is found in a bright state and presents a steep X-ray spectrum, while in all the other epochs it is faint and the spectrum is hard. The soft X-ray spectrum appears to be strongly absorbed, likely by the interven...
متن کاملXMM-Newton observations of the complex spin pulse of the intermediate polar PQ Geminorum
The intermediate polar PQ Geminorum shows a complex pulsation, caused by a spinning white dwarf, which varies markedly with wavelength. We report XMM-Newton observations, including the soft and hard X-ray bands and the first UV lightcurves of this star. We update the ephemeris for PQ Gem allowing us to align these data with a compilation of lightcurves from the optical to the X-ray. Building on...

We present Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of the composite star-forming/Seyfert galaxy IRAS20051-1117. The X-ray imaging and spectral properties reveal the presence of an active nucleus. The Chandra image shows a strong nuclear point source (L(2 − 10keV) ∼ 4 × 10 42 erg s −1). The nuclear X-ray source coincides with a bright, also un-resolved, UV source which appears in the XMM-Newton Opti...
متن کاملFar UV and X-ray observations: a hot view of shell galaxies
Shell galaxies are considered the debris of recent accretion/merging episodes. Their high frequency in low density environments suggest that such episodes could drive the secular evolution for at least some fraction of the early-type galaxy population. We present here the preliminary results of ultraviolet and X-ray data for a sample of three shell galaxies, namely NGC 474, NGC 7070A and ESO 24...
